Here at Smile Design Specialists, we want our patients to rest assured when it comes to their dental implant placement procedure. If you choose to use Dr. Ekstein for your treatment your placement can be quick, painless, and achieved in just a few short visits to our Bergen County office in the convenient town of North Arlington, NJ. Here is some detailed information about what will happen after you choose dental implants.
The first step, after you make the decision to get dental implants and choose the right dentist for you, is to make an appointment with Dr. Ekstein for a comprehensive evaluation. During this appointment, your mouth, teeth and jaw will be completely examined, as well as your medical and dental history. You will then have X-rays taken and perhaps a CT scan as well. This will allow your provider to evaluate your jawbone density and make a plan to ensure you have the best chance for dental implant success. We want you to understand your treatment, the goals, and anything else related to your procedure. That is why it is also important that you ask any questions you may have at this stage.
Step two is usually performed in our office with local anesthesia to ensure a comfortable and pain-free experience. After a small incision is made in your gum line, the implant will be anchored to your jawbone. You will then be sent home for a healing period while your jawbone fuses to the implant. This ensure a stable foundation for your new replacement teeth.
Once the tissues around the implant have healed properly, patients will return to have an abutment attached to the implant. This step is also important because your new replacement tooth will also be crafted to precisely match the shape, size, color, and texture of your natural teeth. This sometimes requires a small incision if gum tissues have grown over the implant. If this happens, additional healing time may be required.
Step four of your dental implant procedure will involve carefully attaching your new replacement tooth to the dental implant that was previously anchored to your jawbone. Once this is complete, you can start enjoying the benefits of your beautiful new smile.
The answer to this question depends on the patient’s dental health, how many implants are being placed, which teeth are replaced, and if any supplemental procedures are needed. If bone or gum tissues are in poor health, extra procedures such as grafting of gum or bone may be required to ensure the best possible chance of implant success. Although they are necessary, supplemental procedures can add up to 6 months to the total procedure healing time.
This question is dependent upon the individual. However, most of our patients say that during their procedure they felt as much pressure as having a wisdom tooth removed. To ensure that you have a pain-free placement procedure, general anesthetic is typically used during the surgery and over-the-counter pain medication can be taken to manage any residual discomfort.
After your dental implant placement, you will be sent home with a list of after-care instructions. These instructions will direct you to minimize pressure on the placement site, restrict physical activities, and get lots of rest after your procedure. Activities like bending and lifting can cause increased bleeding, swelling or complications after your oral surgery. You can expect mild to moderate pain or soreness for the first couple of days. A visual inspection of the implant site should be done regularly and any signs of abnormality should be reported to us immediately.
