Here at Smile Design Specialists, we get lots of questions about dental implants and how they can help our patients. However, one of the most frequently asked questions we get from our New Jersey patients is: what makes a good candidate for dental implants? Continue reading to learn more about what it takes to be a good candidate for dental implants and what you can expect when you choose them to replace your missing or damaged teeth.
Once you choose dental implants to restore your smile, you will need to schedule an initial examination with Dr. Ekstein—1 of only 14 board certified prosthodonists in New Jersey. This initial consultation is critical to the success of your tooth replacement treatment. More specifically, your initial evaluation includes a comprehensive examination of your mouth and a thorough review of your dental history. X-rays or 3D scan may also be taken to determine the health of bone, nerve, and sinus location.
After the complete scans of your mouth have been taken, you can discuss about your options, the costs, and any complications that could happen after your procedure. In the end, we will work with you to develop a treatment plan that is best suited for your individual needs, preferences, and budget.
If you have some characteristics that you are concerned about you should know that most doctors do not immediately disqualify patients for dental implants if they have one of these factors. What typically happens is more analysis and some specific conversation with the patient about additional options. Here are some of the most common characteristics that would require additional patient examination and discussion:
If you happen to have one of the characteristics listed above, there is no need to panic. Having one of these problems does not necessarily mean that you are ineligible, it means that you will need further evaluation and possible supplemental procedures to prepare for successful dental implant surgery. So if you are contemplating dental implants as a solution for your dental woes, put yourself in the best position for success by practicing good oral hygiene, avoiding tobacco products, abstaining from heavy alcohol use, and scheduling a comprehensive evaluation with Dr. Ekstein as soon as possible.
For patients considering dental implant placement, overall health is an important concern. The primary reason for this is that health problems like cancer, diabetes, smoking, alcoholism, or gum disease can make it more difficult for your dental implants to fuse with your jawbone tissues. These obstacles mean that additional steps may be required before your dental implant can be placed. This is why it is also very important for you to let your dental doctor know about your medical history, prescription medications, and any other health concerns that you currently have.
The many outstanding benefits and a wonderful success rate have made dental implants the a great tooth replacement option for many of our New Jersey patients. However, in the end, Dr. Ekstein will be the one to determine the right plan for you after a comprehensive examination. If you are not a good candidate, there is no need to be concerned. It simply warrants further review of your condition, anatomy, goals, and health issues before we can schedule your dental implant placement or provide you with additional options.
